Culicoides dewulfi Goetghebuer, 1936

Synonym(s) C. pseudochiopterus  Downes and Kettle, 1952 General information for the taxon Biogeographic region where the taxon is recorded : Palaearctic Diagnose The female is very similar to those of the other members of the subgenus pale spots in distal part, wide distale pale spot in r5 with apicale edge obliquely from costa to m1 (this pale spot is rounded for C. obsoletus and C. scoticus). Presence of two functional spermathecae with different size and 1 rudimentary spermatheca Presence of sclerotized ring. Joined eyes on a short distance male diagnose : Hypopygium without postlateral processes, The ninth sternite is deeply emarginate, but it differs from C. chiopterus in having the ninth sternite membrane spiculate. Aedageus with triangular shape and broad basal arch Ecology Culicoides dewulfi is known to breed exclusively in the dung of horses or cattle. This species is widely distributed in Western Europe, with locally high abundance (Meiswinkel et al 2008). Implications as vector species Meiswinkel et al (2007) found pools of C. dewulfi positives to BTV-8, incriminating this species as a novel potential vector for bluetongue virus in Europe.
